Ingredients for vegan churro hazelnut chocolate Christmas tree

  • Puff pastry sheets: You’ll need two sheets of puff pastry for this recipe. Most store-bought puff pastry sheets are vegan-friendly but are sure to double-check!
  • Chocolate spread: Use your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread aka vegan nutella.
  • Vegan butter: Just a little to use as the vegan ‘egg wash’. And a little more to help the churro seasoning to stick! The butter will need to be melted and then cooled down a little.
  • Non-dairy milk: I used oat milk, but any plant milk will work!
  • Ground cinnamon: Just a pinch.
  • Sugar: A little granulated sugar for the topping.

How to make the vegan churro hazelnut chocolate Christmas tree

Firstly, happy Christmas Eve! I wanted to share with you a super simple and quick dessert (or even breakfast) for you to make on Christmas!

Grab the two sheets of puff pastry out of the fridge 10 minutes before using. This prevents the pastry sheet from tearing when you go to unroll it out of the packaging. Place one of the sheets onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Dollop the vegan nutella all over the pastry sheet, and then spread until evenly distributed.

Place the second sheet of pastry over the vegan nutella spread. Here comes the fun part, shaping into a Christmas tree. With a sharp knife, cut into a large triangle shape, and then cut a trunk out of the bottom of the triangle. Try to not break the parchment paper below it! If it does replace it with another sheet of parchment paper before moving on to the next step!

Next, cut out the branches of the Christmas tree! Start by pulling all the excess puff pastry away from the tree. And then lightly score two lines down the middle of the triangle to form a tree trunk. It’ll need to be narrower at the top and wider towards the base. Doing this makes it so much easier to cut branches that actually resemble a Christmas tree! But if you want you can also do this with imaginary lines too! Cut out 1-inch thick tree branches on both sides of the tree trunk. Starting with the bottom branches, twist the strip of pastry 2-3 times and as you go up, twist them fewer times.

Final touches

Grab a star cookie cutter, and cut out different sizes of stars from the excess pastry. I like to do one large one for the top of the tree, and small-medium sized ones to decorate the middle of the tree with!

Mix a little oat milk and melted butter in a small bowl. Brush all over the puff pastry tree, and all the stars. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, or however long the package directions advise! While it bakes, combine granulated sugar with ground cinnamon. Brush the warm, hazelnut Christmas tree with a little more vegan melted butter. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar over the whole tree. Enjoy warm with your loved ones!

Wishing you and your loved ones happy holidays! 🎅🏽 Love, Parita xx

Description

This vegan churro hazelnut chocolate Christmas tree is a speedy, last-minute dessert that tastes incredible!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • 1 cup vegan nutella
  • 2 tbsp vegan salted butter (melted)
  • 1/2 tbsp oat milk
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 220°C/428°F
  2. Place a sheet of puff pastry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread the vegan nutella all over. Place the second puff pastry over the top. Shape into a tree, and then cut the branches but cutting out 1-inch slits on both sides, keeping the middle intact. If you think you'll find this hard to do, lightly score a trunk onto the large triangle, making sure the top is more narrow, and the bottom side of the tree is wider.
  3. To create the branches, twist the puff pastry strip 1-3 times. The bottom branches should have fewer twists, and the ones at the top will probably only have 1-2. With the excess puff pastry, cut out stars with a cookie cutter. One larger star for the top of the tree, and fewer smaller ones to decorate the tree trunk with. Press the stars onto the tree. In a small bowl combine, 1 tbsp melted butter with the oat milk. Brush all over the puff pastry tree and stars. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden.
  4. While the Christmas tree bakes, mix the granulated sugar with ground cinnamon. Brush the freshly baked, warm tree with the remaining 1 tbsp of butter. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture all over. Enjoy warm!!
